Make it stand out

Welcome to Florida Unwritten, a Florida blog where Everglades travel meets backroad tales, hurricane survival tips, and stories born from palm shade and panther tracks.

Whether you're chasing the best beaches, curious about Florida folklore, or trying to decode the Florida lifestyle one lightning strike at a time—you’re in the right place.

This isn’t the Florida they show on postcards. It’s the one we live, breathe, and write into legend

📝 Why We Tell These Stories (With a Smile

FloridaUnwritten was born on the backroads and blackwater trails of a state both celebrated and misunderstood—a place where the moss hangs low, the gators lurk deep, and every tall tale is just a little too true.

But let’s be clear: this isn’t just a blog. It’s a survival guide wrapped in folklore, soaked in sun, and told with a crooked grin. Around here, we believe that humor is more than a punchline—it’s a tool for clarity, connection, and occasionally, self-defense (especially during hurricane season).

Founded by Earl Lee—a storyteller with mud on his boots, bugs in his grill, and history in his bones—we explore Florida’s mysteries and resilience with equal parts reverence and ridiculousness. From haunted lighthouses to alligator alleys, you’ll find practical wisdom stirred into stories that stick, sting, and make you laugh when you least expect it.

Every community has a tale worth telling. Ours just happen to come with a wink, a weird twist, and a reminder that the best lessons are often delivered in flip-flops—some wrapped in moss, some in myth, and some in a headline that sounds way too strange to be real (and probably is).

Camping scene at dusk by a lake with a motorhome, a tent, outdoor tables, and a group of people sitting around a table, under a streetlamp, with a sunset sky and trees in the background.
Two women with vintage hairstyles and headscarves thoughtfully sitting at a window, one holding a glass of iced tea with a straw. The woman on the left wears an orange top and yellow headscarf, and the woman on the right wears a green checkered shirt and green headscarf. They are engaged in conversation.

A World Without Sweet Tea: The Unsweetened History of the South

🩴 Four Corners, Many Road

At FloridaUnwritten, no two stories wear the same boots. In one corner, you'll find a real tale from the road—campfires flickering under Florida skies, or the thrill of surviving a night in the lightning capital of the country. In another, we veer toward imagined terrain: a South where sweet tea never existed (gasp) or a world where folklore doesn’t just survive—it rewrites itself.

These four images don’t just lead to stories—they open doors to the different ways we tell them. Some with facts. Some with fiction. All of them with a crooked grin and a mosquito bite of truth.

Click a corner and see where the road takes you.

The Story So Far... and Still Unfolding

At FloridaUnwritten, storytelling isn’t just one flavor—it’s a whole gumbo pot. We mix up history and humor, roadside weirdness and Southern wisdom, fiction with just enough facts to make you wonder.

Some days we give you the best of Florida—the where, what, and when behind real places, from forgotten fishing towns to ghost-whispered coastlines. Other days, we flip the page and head into what we call Flip-Flop Fiction—tales passed down like my great-grandad’s fishing lies, or made up by me when the truth was too slow to show up.
